Maryland 4-H, MD

Maryland 4-H offers Clover programs for youth ages 5-7 and 4-H Club programs for youth ages 8-18. 4-H is in each Maryland county and Baltimore City. 4-H creates innovative programs that meet the evolving needs of our nation's diverse suburban and urban youth while continuing to fulfill the needs of young citizens in rural America. 4-H involves youth in self-determined, hands-on learning activities such as workforce skills, citizenship, public speaking and other local 4-H program areas. Youth use their own learning styles and participate at their own pace in a wide variety of projects and activities.

Maryland Ag in the Classroom, Havre de Grace, MD

Through field trips, tours and hands-on workshops, interactive training for K-12 grade teachers demonstrates how to infuse agricultural concepts into existing curriculum and meet Maryland State Standards. Teachers receive numerous resource materials and ready to use lessons in the workshops. Students receive direct agricultural training as the mobile science labs visit schools across the state. Agriculture plays a critical role in our lives. It provides an experiential teaching tool for the core curricula of science, social studies, life skills, mathematics, and language arts. Incorporating agriculture into teaching and learning creates the foundation that students, as future citizens, need to make educated decisions regarding food choices and nutrition, community issues, land use planning, and natural resource conservation.

Maryland Cooperative Extension

Maryland Cooperative Extension (MCE) is a statewide, informal education system within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. MCE educational programs and problem-solving assistance are available to citizens and are based on the research and experience of land grant universities such as the University of Maryland, College Park. In Maryland, MCE employs approximately 200 faculty and approximately 200 support staff and contractual employees located at the University of Maryland, College Park, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 23 counties, Baltimore City, and four research and education centers. Many MCE faculty members located on the College Park campus have joint appointments with research and academic programs. These joint appointments promote the exchange of knowledge among the college's three units.

Sheep and Goat Marketing Program, Keedysville, MD

The Sheep and Goat Marketing Program is intended to build capacity to supply the growing consumer demand for high quality sheep and goat meat. It was originally called The "Northeast" Sheep and Goat Marketing Program and had this goal in mind for the Northeastern states. Due to it's success and the importance of the goal, we are now expanding the program geographically. The program had developed from a grant received by Cornell University from the USDA to improve sheep and goat marketing infrastructure in the Northeast. Funds for the grant were made available to the industry as a result of the successful petition by the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) et al to slow the flow of imported sheep products into the United States. Funds from the resulting short term tariff imposition on imported sheep meats are being recycled into the industry to improve its competitive position.
